“The only thing I wish was a little better (no complaints here though) is that the area to place a tent at BH29 is sloped on the hillside. Maybe flatten the area out a little bit more. My stay was great and the weather was beautiful”
“Always love stopping here, great campground. ”

Buckhorn Recreation Area sits on the western shore of Black Butte Lake at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, about 100 miles north of Sacramento and roughly a 30-minute drive south of Red Bluff. The lake itself was created in 1963 with the completion of Black Butte Dam on Stony Creek and can reach about 4,460 acres at high water, with roughly 40 miles of shoreline backed by dark basalt buttes and pockets of blue oak woodland. That shoreline and open water define the campground's character: the lake is a warm-water fishery known for crappie, channel catfish, and both large- and smallmouth bass, and it draws sailors, wakeboarders and water-skiers to its modern boat ramp complex. For land-based activity there are roughly 13 miles of fitness trails along the shore for hiking, running and biking, plus playgrounds, picnic spots and wildlife viewing; disc golf, horse trails at Grizzly Flat and Burris Creek, and a route into Mendocino National Forest are all within easy reach. The developed Buckhorn campground contains a total of 93 campsites, with 88 sites suitable for both RVs and tents and five tent-only walk-in sites; sites are grouped in three numbered loops (1-22: 22 sites; 23-6: 43 sites; 66-8: 27 sites). Facilities on site include showers, two playgrounds, an exercise area, shoreline access and that modern boat ramp there is also a group campground for larger gatherings however no campsites offer electric or water hookups. The area is open year-round; reservations and fee information are handled through reserveusa.com. To reach Buckhorn from Interstate 5, use the Orland/Black Butte Lake exit and follow the county roads west to Buckhorn Road for the final approach to the recreation area.
