Sycamore Grove Campground sits at about 300 feet above sea level on a riparian stretch of the Sacramento River inside the 488-acre Red Bluff Recreation Area, an off-parcel of Mendocino National Forest just east of Interstate 5 at Red Bluff. The site is defined by wide grassy lawns shaded by mature oak and sycamore trees, and its 31 total campsites are set among that canopy 30 sites accommodate both tents and RVs and one site is designated for RVs only. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill, and potable water is available on site. The campground is open year-round; for current fees, reservations, access requirements and other facility-specific questions call the managing office at (530) 934-3316. Recreation centers on the river and a four-mile paved nature trail that threads through flowering grasslands, wetlands and oak woodlands, with long views toward Mount Shasta, Mount Lassen and the Yolla Bolly range. The Sacramento River at Sycamore Grove is used for fishing (Chinook, steelhead and striped bass are present), boating, canoeing, swimming and tow-sports such as water skiing and jet skiing, while the trail network and nearby open areas invite hiking and biking from the campground. The Sacramento River Discovery Center is adjacent to the recreation area for interpretive exhibits and visitor information, and the campground makes a convenient base for day trips: it's about 2 miles from town of Red Bluff, roughly 34 miles south of Redding, 40 miles from Lake Shasta and about 60 miles from Lassen Volcanic National Park. For a broader range of activities offered in the Mendocino National Forest (horseback riding, OHV use, fire lookout/cabin overnight rentals, picnicking and more), check with forest or recreation area staff before you go.
