“Wonderful campsite. The facilities were good. Beautiful time of year (mid-May), and lots of amazing birds and raptors. We also had fun at the Disc golf course next door. Good hiking in the area. ”
“There are very low tree branches over many of the sites. One of them ripped the TV antenna off the roof of our 5th wheel. ”

Orland Buttes Recreation Area sits on the north end of the Sacramento Valley at Black Butte Lake, roughly 100 miles north of Sacramento and about 30 miles south of Red Bluff. The lake was created in 1963 with the completion of Black Butte Dam on Stony Creek and, when water is high, covers about 4,460 acres with roughly 40 miles of shoreline. Dark basalt buttes and stands of blue oak frame the water, giving the shoreline a mix of rocky outcrops and oak-dotted flats. That variety of terrain feeds directly into the lake's recreation scene: the wide open water is popular for sailing, wakeboarding and water skiing, while shoreline anglers come for warm-water species such as crappie, channel catfish and both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Hikers can follow the Paul Thomas Trail for lakeside views, disc golfers play an 18-hole course on site, and nearby areas like Grizzly Flat and Burris Creek add horse trails and multiuse fitness trails at Buckhorn for longer outings. The family-oriented Orland Buttes campground provides 35 campsites all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and a separate group campground that fits up to 50 people. Sites do not offer electric or water hookups, so RVs and trailers need to be self-sufficient; showers are available at the campground and a boat ramp complex gives direct lake access for launching. The recreation area supports a full slate of activities boating, camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking, playground use, disc golf (the specialized sport site), water sports and wildlife viewing and the facility is open seasonally from April 1 through the second Monday in September. For reservations and fee information, contact reserveusa.com; access from Interstate 5 is straightforward via the Orland/Black Butte Lake exit, followed by a short drive west toward the lake.
