Gray Pine Group Camp sits at about 1,700 feet in the Mendocino National Forest, a remote stretch of mountains and canyons in northwestern California that covers roughly 913,306 acres. The campground is a single group site set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and is sized to comfortably hold up to 75 guests, making it a practical choice for family reunions, organized outings, or multi-family getaways rather than individual car-camp setups. The approach is along forest roads off the I-5 corridor via the Stonyford area (roughly a three-hour drive north of San Francisco or Sacramento), with the last miles on Fouts Springs Road and Forest Road 18N03; the entrance is marked by a locked gate, so access requires planning. Facilities are described as traditional camping, and because the site is the lone campsite at Gray Pine, parties should prepare to be largely self-sufficient and to follow any road- or gate-access instructions provided by the forest managers. Beyond the group pad itself, the surrounding Mendocino National Forest offers a broad range of outdoor options: lakes within the forest provide boating, fishing and swimming opportunities, trails and backcountry terrain support hiking, backpacking and horseback riding, and the area is popular for off-highway vehicle (OHV) use and seasonal hunting. Wildlife viewing is common deer, birds and smaller mammals are often seen and the forest also hosts fire lookouts and overnight cabins for other backcountry experiences. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations, seasonal access and any gate or road restrictions, check the Mendocino National Forest website (www.fs.usda.gov/mendocino) or contact the local ranger district before you go; that will ensure your group knows about current conditions and any permits or additional rules that apply.
