“Peaceful clean and relaxing. I went there Spontaneously and it was great choice. I’m definitely heading back there whenever I’m in Fresno. I recommend it!! ”
“The Internet description and photo of our reserved site was completely deceptive. We were parked in a pull-out just off the road. (really in the road) This was NOT what I was led to believe when I made the reservation.”
“Rangers are so personable and the campground is one of the cleanest I've been to!”

Island Park Recreation Area sits on the western edge of the Sierra and Sequoia National Forests where the Kings River widens into Pine Flat Lake, about a 45 60 minute drive east of Fresno along Highway 180 into Kings River Canyon. The lake stretches roughly 20 miles and offers 67 miles of shoreline; the reservoir created by Pine Flat Dam in 1954 holds up to a million acre-feet at full capacity and doubles as flood control and irrigation infrastructure for the valley below. The campground contains 91 total campsites: 75 sites designed to accommodate both RVs and tents and 16 tent-only sites. Those are arranged into two main loops the Upper loops (44 sites) and an Overflow loop (45 sites) plus two reservable group sites that include access to a horseshoe pit and a volleyball court. Most individual campsites are non-electric, though 25 sites provide electric hookups and five of those also have water; one accessible site meets accessibility standards and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Facilities for day-use boaters include a boat ramp and vault toilets, while campers have access to flush toilets throughout the recreation area. Because management, fees, and reservation windows can change, check the forest service for current policies before you go. The lake is the focal point for recreation here: boating, jet skiing and water sports are common in summer, and anglers chase largemouth and spotted bass as well as rainbow trout. The campground connects directly to the Blue Oak Trail, a quarter-mile interpretive route that's family-friendly and offers a quick stroll to stretch legs after launching a boat. Wildlife viewing is rewarding red-tailed hawks patrol the oak-pine transition zone and bobcats are occasionally seen in quieter hours and the Kings River upstream offers whitewater rafting in spring and early summer. Onsite amenities support a broad set of activities listed for the area (boating, camping, fishing, hiking, concession services, picnicking, playground, specialized sport sites, water sports and wildlife viewing), so Island Park works well for mixed groups who want lake access and easy trail options without venturing deep into the high country. If you plan to bring an RV for long stays, be aware most sites lack hookups, so prepare accordingly.
