“Nice campgrounds. Great escape from the city. The host was lovely. Lots of flies and mosquitos during the day. ”

Upper Oso Campground sits at about 1,040 feet in the lower Santa Ynez Recreation Area of Los Padres National Forest, roughly 25 miles north of Santa Barbara and reached from Highway 154 and Paradise Road by a short drive on a forest route. The campground's eight sites are spread among mature oak trees beside a seasonal creek, offering shade and a woodsy setting; three of those sites accommodate both RVs and tents while five are tent-only. Each site comes with a picnic table, a campfire ring with grill and a separate pedestal grill, and accessible flush toilets and drinking water are available in the campground. The site mix includes family-friendly equestrian options and some sites are outfitted with horse corrals and extra-long, paved parking spurs; firewood is sold on-site by the campground host. Upper Oso is open year-round reservations for a single campsite cover up to six people and one vehicle; the maximum per site is eight people (additional guests are $10 per person per night after six) and two vehicles (the second vehicle is $10 per night). Any extra-person or extra-vehicle fees are collected at the facility. What separates Upper Oso for many visitors is its direct access to trail systems and nearby water recreation. The Santa Cruz Trail leaves the campground area and runs about 18 miles north to the San Rafael Wilderness, and the 2.5-mile Aliso National Recreation Trail leads to a nearby group campsite; mountain bikers and horseback riders will find routes that begin in and around the camp. Off-highway vehicle users can access the roughly 10-mile Camuesa OHV loop from the surrounding forest, while anglers and swimmers head less than two miles to White Rock Day-Use Area or about 10 miles northwest to Cachuma Lake Recreation Area a no-body-contact reservoir offering boating, fishing and kayaking with annually stocked trout as well as carp and bass. In short, Upper Oso functions as a small, well-equipped base for hiking, biking, equestrian outings, OHV riding, picnicking and a range of water-based activities in the broader Los Padres National Forest.
