Los Prietos Campground sits on the side of the Santa Ynez Mountains in Los Padres National Forest, a green, leafy pocket of mature oak trees and understory vegetation that gives many sites good shade and a sense of separation from neighbors. The looped campground contains 37 single-family sites 29 are configured for both RVs and tents, and 8 are tent-only and sites are equipped with a picnic table, a campfire ring with grill and a separate pedestal grill. There are no utility hookups for RVs, but the campground does provide flush toilets, drinking water, and trash collection at convenient locations. Vehicle access is straightforward from Santa Barbara: head east on Highway 154 from Highway 101 for about 11 miles, then follow Paradise Road roughly 3 miles into the campground area; downtown Santa Barbara and the coast are roughly 19 miles away. Outdoor opportunities around Los Prietos are varied and close at hand. The Santa Ynez River is less than a half-mile away at White Rock Day Use Area and is a local hub for water-related recreation, while Cachuma Lake about 10 miles northwest is a no-body-contact reservoir popular for boating, fishing, and kayaking with annually stocked trout as well as carp and bass. Hikers and riders can pick up the Aliso National Recreation Trail, a 2.5-mile loop that begins near the campground, or head farther out on the 18-mile Santa Cruz Trail; the Camuesa OHV Route and connecting trails are also available within about 10 miles for off-highway vehicle riding. In addition to camping, the broader forest offers auto-touring, biking, climbing, picnicking, and visitor center information; because fees, reservation rules, seasonal access, and trail or road conditions can change, check the Forest Service or recreation.gov for current policies and availability before you go.
