Ariana D ★ 4 · Oct 2025As a solo female camper, I felt pretty safe at this site despite being the only one at the campground for my entire stay. A camp host definitely would’ve helped but I totally understand the lack there of. The lake is absolutely gorgeous and the loop is pretty easy to walk. Site 20 is huge and definitely has enough space for everything you need, even got to use my hammock ! Mosquitos are the main downside, but I’m in their house so I just used lots of bug spray and left without any bites. No bear encounters like others have had though, overall a super cool site. No data at all until you reach the beginning of Hoopa and no water so plan accordingly
Matthew V ★ 4 · Sep 2025Tucked 7 miles into the National Forest in a small valley, you have to drive up a winding USFS road, which at times hug steep cliffs and beautiful sights. Once you get to the camp you find a secluded spot away from the worst of civilization. As with all spots near stagnant waters, you'll never have a moment to yourself, always being hounded by bugs, birds, and other creatures. I had the pleasure to stay in spot 17, on the far end of the campground, it was the perfect spot for me to get a peaceful night sleep. The grounds themselves are a mixture of waist high bushes, towering trees, stumps, and flat spaces for you to pitch your tent. The soil is soft and mailable, so finding a good spot is ideal for your tent not disappear during a bathroom break. There's multiple restrooms available to all campers, and a sound lake not to far from the sites. Once you get past the lily pads and the weeds on the lake shore, it is a beautiful swim. Hardly any wind, noise, or humans could reach you up here. So if you don't mind a drive to wake you up in the morning with the twists and turns not only of the USFS road, but also the State Routes leading up to it, this is the perfect campground for you.
Amy S ★ 5 · Jul 2025We stayed at site 17 and it was lovely. It is very big and set back from the road. There are a couple spots for tents, but we slept in our vehicle. There aren’t any perfect trees for a hammock but if you wanted to stretch the ropes out you could make it work. It is barely down the road from the vault bathrooms. Site 18 is right across from the bathrooms and it has an amazing view of the lake but the site itself is tiny and close to the road. The roads getting to the campground are in mostly good condition. Six miles off the hwy and then 3 miles off that road. There is a resident bear that lives in the park, multiple campers saw him, but he was always running away in every encounter. The lake itself is surrounded by lily pads and not great for swimming. A flotation device, kayak, or small boat would be ideal to get to the center of the lake where it is clear. There are croppie, large mouth bass, and trout in the lake for fishing.

Fish Lake Campground sits at about 1,780 feet above sea level along the shore of Fish Lake, where lily pads lace the shallows and stands of Douglas fir and Port Orford cedar cast cool, low-level shade. The campground has 24 sites in total, and all 24 are suitable for both RVs and tents; some sites look directly across the water while others put you a short walk from the lake edge. Amenities are basic but practical: vault toilets, a potable drinking water source, picnic tables and combination fire-ring grills at each site. The setting feels quiet and wooded rather than manicured midsummer breezes move through the mixed hardwoods and conifers, and anglers can expect trout, bluegill and bass in the lake. Reach the campground by driving south from Orleans on State Route 96 and then continuing on the local Bluff Creek and forest roads for a short distance; it's roughly a 15 16 mile drive by road from Orleans. If you want to paddle or cool off, Fish Lake itself is popular for canoeing and swimming, and three trailheads in the campground the Blue Lake, Red Lake and Fish Lake trails give you direct access to local hikes. For more adventurous river outings, the Klamath, Trinity and Salmon Rivers are nearby and well regarded for kayaking, whitewater rafting and river fishing. The larger Six Rivers National Forest offers additional activities such as auto touring, biking, horse camping and horseback riding, off-highway vehicle use, and backcountry hiking and fishing, so Fish Lake can be a quiet base for a wider range of outings. The nearest services are in Weitchpec about 12 miles north, where Yurok tribal offices, a community center and a small store and gas station are located. Fee, reservation and seasonal-access details are not listed here, so check the Six Rivers National Forest website or contact the local ranger district before you go.
