Perched high on the western slope of Mount Rose at about 9,300 feet, Mount Rose Campground sits between Reno and Lake Tahoe just off State Route 431 (the Mount Rose Highway). The site is shaded by a mix of lodgepole, Jeffrey and white pine plus red fir, so most camps get afternoon shade even at this elevation; the thin mountain air and rapidly changing weather make layers and a good sleeping bag advisable. Hiking is the campground's main draw: trailheads for Tahoe Meadows, the Tahoe Rim Trail, the Mount Rose Wilderness routes and the Mount Rose Summit Trail begin very near the loop, so you can step out of camp and head uphill or link into longer Tahoe-area routes. The broader Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest around Mount Rose supports a wide range of activities biking, climbing, fishing, horseback riding and winter sports among them though the immediate campground experience centers on day hikes, summit objectives and quick runs into the Tahoe basin (Lake Tahoe is under 30 minutes away for boating, fishing or scenic drives). The site infrastructure is straightforward and well-maintained: there are a total of 26 campsites, with 19 sites configured to accept both RVs and tents and 7 designated tent-only spots; layouts include single- and double-family sites plus one triple-family site. Roads and parking spurs throughout the campground are paved, and every campsite has a picnic or utility table, a campfire ring and grill; food storage lockers are provided, along with vault toilets and drinking water. Because mountain weather and seasonal conditions can affect access, check current road and site status, fees and reservation options with the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Headquarters before you go. For planning or mail, the campground's mailing address is PO Box 104, Markleeville, CA 96120; the physical location is on Mt. Rose Hwy, State Route 431, Reno, NV 89511.
