Meadow Group Campground sits at about 5,300 feet in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, a mix of Coulter pines, scrub oaks and open grassland that supports active bird life ten species of woodpeckers are regularly reported and small mammals along nearby nature trails. It's reached from the Los Angeles basin by following the Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2) north from the I-210/La Cañada area for roughly 25 26 miles; turn onto lower Chilao Road (Forest Road 3N21) and follow it about 1.5 miles to the gated entrance (use the combination provided with your reservation). The campground is about 1.5 miles from both the San Gabriel Wilderness where hiking and horseback travel are allowed and the Chilao Visitor Center, which offers interpretive exhibits, campfire programs and guided bird-watching opportunities. The Angeles Crest Scenic Byway runs nearby and several roadside vistas give wide views across the Mojave Desert, the San Gabriel range and the surrounding valleys, so day trips and short rides along SR-2 are common activities for groups based here. This is explicitly a group facility with two large sites (total campsites: 2), both configured to accept tents and RVs: Area 1 holds up to 24 people with three picnic tables, fire rings, one water spigot and an animal-resistant dumpster; Area 2 accommodates up to 80 people and includes ten picnic tables, fire rings, two water spigots, a drinking fountain and its own animal-resistant dumpster. Flush toilets are available and are shared between the two group areas. Because these are reservable group sites, you can book up to 12 months in advance through Recreation.gov (reservation transactions appear on credit cards as "Recreation.gov 877-444-6777") or by calling 1-877-444-6777. A $10 service fee applies to changes or cancellations and, for group overnight facility reservations canceled within 14 days of arrival, you forfeit the first night's use fee in addition to the service fee; no-shows and late cancellations can incur further penalties (a no-show may be assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit fees). Refund requests must be made within 14 days after your scheduled departure; refunds to cards are credited to the original card, and checks or cash refunds are processed by check within about 30 days per Recreation.gov policy.
