Perched on the Kaibab Plateau at about 8,200 feet, North Rim Campground sits in a dense stand of ponderosa pine and aspen just a short walk from the canyon edge, where exposed layers of rock drop away to the Colorado River far below. The campground contains 87 sites in total 72 sites that accommodate both tents and smaller RVs and 15 tent-only sites plus a separate group tent area; every campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with a cooking grill, and group sites have two of each. Water spigots and restrooms with flush toilets and sinks are located throughout the main loop, while the tent-only section is served by a nearby vault toilet (tent campers are welcome to use the main facilities as well). Be aware that many sites are sloped or hemmed in by trees, with tight turns and narrow passages; large or high-profile RVs, trailer pop-outs, and awnings may not fit in many sites, and the posted maximum vehicle length on each site description refers to the combined length of your RV/trailer plus tow vehicle. Access to the North Rim is remote: the campground sits at the end of State Highway 67, roughly 210 miles (about a 4.5-hour drive) from Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim, 41 miles south of Jacob Lake, 87 miles south of Kanab (UT), and 120 miles southwest of Page (AZ); Highway 67 is the only road in and out and there is no road crossing the canyon to the opposite rim. The registration kiosk is open daily to assist with check-in and reservation modifications, and the North Rim Visitor Center and Grand Canyon Lodge are about a mile south; the lodge runs the general store, showers/laundry and gas station and provides food service through October 15 (note the showers/laundry may be closed during park-wide water restrictions). The North Rim is closed for the winter, and staffing is seasonal (staffed 05/15 10/15 local staff (928) 638-7814 unstaffed 11/13 05/14 general information (877) 444-6777). If you're planning to bring an RV to explore nearby viewpoints and trailheads, remember vehicle length limits apply on Cape Royal Scenic Road, Widforss Trailhead, and North Kiabab Trailhead (22 feet), and the campground's site descriptions list the maximum combined vehicle length to help you choose an appropriate site. From this high forested rim you can easily access hiking and wildlife-viewing opportunities on the plateau and down into the canyon, see the endemic Kaibab squirrel, and use the campground as a base for auto touring, biking, fishing, paddling and other park activities.
