Desert View Campground sits high on the South Rim at 7,463 ft (2,275 m), about 23 miles east of Grand Canyon Village and less than a half-mile from the canyon rim, where short walks lead to wide vistas and the historic Desert View Watchtower. The campground contains 49 campsites officially listed as RV sites, though most are sized to accommodate tents or smaller RVs and travel trailers with a maximum total length of 30 ft (9 m); note that vehicles over roughly 29 ft (8.8 m) can have difficulty negotiating turns. Sites are shaded by pinyon and juniper and provide a quiet, low-impact base for sunrise and sunset photography, bird and wildlife viewing (elk, mule deer, coyotes, lizards and songbirds are common), and stargazing. California condors are occasionally seen soaring well above the canyon. The Desert View area also offers a small general store and gas station with limited groceries and firewood, plus interpretive opportunities at the Watchtower and nearby Tusayan Ruin and Museum within a few miles. Facilities are basic and designed for self-sufficient camping: each site has a picnic table and campfire grill, all campsites are dry (no utility, water or sewer hookups), and there are two water faucets in the campground and restrooms with flushing toilets and sinks (no hot water); ADA accessible restrooms are provided. There are no showers, laundromat or dump station at Desert View those services are at Mather Campground in Grand Canyon Village about 26 miles (42 km) west, though Mather's showers and laundromat are listed as CLOSED AT THIS TIME due to COVID-19. Desert View operates seasonally (generally mid-April to mid-October) and because of high demand requires advance reservations during the season; sites may be booked up to six months in advance, there is no holdback for first-come, first-served camping during peak season and no wait list, and same-day reservations are available online at Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Campsite fees are $18 per night, with a 50% discount for Interagency Senior/Access and Golden Age/Access pass holders; sites are limited to six people, two tents, and either two vehicles or one RV per site, and group reservations or combining multiple sites for affiliated groups is not permitted.
