Rex Hale Campground sits along the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway about 36 miles west of Cody, Wyoming, on the south side of US-14/16/20 and roughly 16 18 miles east of Yellowstone National Park's east entrance. The loop contains 29 campsites, each set up to accommodate both tents and RVs; every site includes a picnic table, campfire ring and a metal food-storage locker, and some sites also offer electrical hookups. Potable water, vault toilets and roadside trash collection are provided, and campers are allowed to gather dead-and-down firewood in the area. Because large carnivores live in this country, the presence of food lockers is intentional use them and follow current Forest Service guidance on food storage and bear safety. Fees, reservation rules and seasonal opening dates are determined by the Forest Service, so plan to check current conditions and policies before you go. The campground is a practical base for fly-fishing on the North Fork of the Shoshone River (rainbow and Yellowstone cutthroat are common), day hikes, scenic drives and wildlife watching; look for bighorn sheep on the red cliffs nearby and keep an eye out for elk, moose, bison, deer, foxes, coyotes, bald eagles and occasionally grizzly bears. Within a mile you can visit Mummy Cave, a long-occupied archaeological alcove listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a short drive west brings you to the firefighter memorial dedicated to Rex Hale and other victims of the 1937 Blackwater Fire, with additional memorials accessible via Forest Service Trail 758. Pahaska Tepee and Buffalo Bill's original hunting lodge lie farther west and offer seasonal tours and horseback rides between Memorial Day and Labor Day, while the town of Cody provides restaurants, lodging and museum exhibits for a fuller cultural stop before or after a night under the pines.
