Seneca Shadows sits in the river valley of the Monongahela National Forest with mountains rising on both the east and west sides and the unmistakable 900-foot face of Seneca Rocks visible from most campsites. The North Fork South Branch Potomac River runs nearby, making fishing a common pastime, and two local caves offer options for ambitious explorers. Rock climbers and hikers will find direct access to the Seneca Rocks trail across the road from the campground, while the Seneca Rocks Visitor Center a short walk away provides viewing platforms, educational exhibits, a small catch-and-release fishing area and a gift shop. The broader forest around Seneca Shadows spans elevations from about 1,000 to 4,863 feet and supports a wide range of activities beyond the campground, including auto touring, biking, boating, wildlife viewing and interpretive programs. The campground is a modern facility with flush toilets, lantern posts at sites, picnic tables and campfire rings; firewood is available for sale on-site. Seneca Shadows offers a total of 81 campsites: 38 sites designated for both RVs and tents and 43 tent-only sites, plus three group (GRP) tent-only sites. The campground is arranged in loops Loop A contains 10 sites and Loop B contains 15 sites and Loop C provides the electric hookups (standard electric sites carry an $8 electric attribute fee in addition to the normal site use fee, which ranges from $22 to $36). Many visitors use Seneca Shadows as a base for exploring the Potomac Highlands; it's accessed from US-33 between Elkins and Franklin or from State Route 28 south of Petersburg. Because fees, reservation rules and seasonal availability can change, check the forest's recreation website or call the Seneca Rocks Visitor Center before you go.
