“Great campsite, had everything we needed and the hosts were so sweet! The fire pits have optional grills which is nice, there are flush toilets, easy access to drinking water and trash bins. There are trees between lots so there is privacy as well. Great experience!”
“The sites are in great shape and the facilities are well maintained and clean. Beautiful mountains surrounding with easy hiking and exploring along the river. The hosts were very nice and helpful.”

Big Bend Campground sits along a pronounced bend of the South Branch Potomac River inside Smoke Hole Canyon, where the current and the steep, tree-lined walls shape a lively riverside scene. The campground is explicitly family-oriented and functions as a recreation hub for fishing, tubing, kayaking and river swimming; a one-mile Big Bend Loop Trail traces most of the river bend and is an easy walk that keeps you close to the water. For people who want to stretch farther, roughly 30 miles of maintained trails are nearby and mountain biking is permitted on most of them, while the larger Monongahela National Forest supports a wide range of activities from auto touring and boating to climbing, interpretive programs and wildlife viewing making Big Bend a convenient base for both short outings and longer exploratory days. The woods here include stands of older trees that put on strong fall color, and the canyon's name reflects local lore about caves and rising mist that gave the impression of "smoke holes." The campground has 46 total campsites, and per the official breakdown every site is configured for both RVs and tents. Of those 46 sites, 18 are non-reservable (first-come, first-served), and the river loop includes 12 sites with tent pads for easier tent setup; all sites are fitted with a lantern holder, picnic table and fire ring. Practical services include drinking water, a dump-and-fill station, two pit toilets, flush-toilet restrooms in each loop and a single shower house. Because fees and seasonal dates can change, plan to check the Monongahela National Forest website or contact the local ranger district for current reservation procedures and seasonal availability before you go. Access is by car via WV Route 28/55 and the local Smoke Hole Road from Petersburg (about 24 miles when following the published driving directions), and the campground is within a day's drive of larger cities such as Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh for those looking to escape to the canyon for a long weekend.
