Stuart Recreation Area occupies a bend on the Shavers Fork River where mixed hardwoods give way to open riverbank, so your campsite soundtrack is often rushing water and bird song. The river here is regularly stocked with trout, making fly and bait anglers a common sight, and the shallow, sandy stretches are used for cooling off on warm days; a maintained beach in the day-use area provides an easy spot to get in the water. A two-mile River Loop Hiking Trail starts from the campground and threads through riparian forest and overlooks, and the immediate trail network can be used to reach local caves and, with a short drive, the higher overlooks around Blackwater Falls. Because Stuart sits in the Allegheny Mountains portion of Monongahela National Forest, the larger area offers a wide range of activities from auto touring and mountain biking to hunting, interpretive programs and overnight stays in a few historic fire lookouts or cabins and the town of Elkins is about a 14-minute drive away, where the annual Mountain State Forest Festival takes place each October. The campground is compact and straightforward: 30 sites in a single loop with long spurs, 27 of which are set up for both RVs and tents and 3 that are tent-only. Each site includes a campfire ring, a tent pad and a lantern post, and most sites have electric hookups; there's drinking water, accessible flush toilets and showers, and an on-site dump station. Day visitors can use three picnic pavilions and the maintained fields at the riverfront. Access is by paved local highways east of Elkins (follow Highway 219/33 toward old Route 33 and then Highway 6 to the Stuart Recreation Area), but seasonal conditions and facility openings can change, so contact the Monongahela National Forest office or the reservation service before you go to confirm current fees, reservation requirements and seasonal availability.
