Trout Pond Recreation Area sits in the northern part of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest near Wardensville, West Virginia, reached by a short drive down a Forest Service road off the county route coming out of the SR 55 corridor. The site centers on two lakes: Rock Cliff Lake, a 17-acre man-made reservoir with an average depth of 12 feet and a maximum of 36, and Trout Pond, the state's only naturally formed lake, which filled a sinkhole with mountain stream flow and runoff from Long Mountain. Both bodies of water shape the campground's character Rock Cliff has a stretch of white-sand mountain beach and a designated swim area adjacent to a day-use zone with a boat ramp, showers, a playground and 30 picnic sites; Trout Pond offers easy lakeside trails and holds native brook trout. Fishing is a big draw here (Rock Cliff is stocked, Trout Pond supports native brook trout), and boaters are welcome with all types of craft from motors to sailboats; note that Trout Pond's water levels can vary, so check the Forest Service site for current conditions before you go. The campground itself contains 36 sites in total: 35 sites accommodate both RVs and tents, and 1 is tent-only. Each site includes a campfire ring and a picnic table, and some sites offer electrical hookups; hot showers and flush toilets are an easy walk from every campsite. Hikers will find the easy Trout Pond Loop, roughly 4 miles with an optional 2-mile side route that leads to an overlook of Rock Cliff Lake, while steeper connecting trails climb Long and Devil's Hole Mountains for a more strenuous outing. Fee information is straightforward: standard non-electric sites are $19.00 per night, and group shelter rates are $65 for 1 50 people or $100 for 51 100 people; for reservations, seasonal openings and up-to-date site or trail conditions, consult the Forest Service recreation pages.
