Elizabeth Furnace is a very small, single-site campground located inside the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest; there is exactly one campsite and it is designated to accommodate both RVs and tents. Because there's only one spot, this campground functions on a strictly first-come, first-served basis you must physically arrive to purchase and claim the site. On-site payment is required; where available you can use the Recreation.gov Scan and Pay feature by scanning a posted QR code, but that option requires that you have already downloaded the free Recreation.gov mobile app (https://www.recreation.gov/mobile-app) before you arrive because parts of the forest have limited or no cellular service. While Elizabeth Furnace itself is minimal in scale, it sits within a national forest that supports a wide range of outdoor pursuits: auto touring and scenic drives, biking, boating, fishing and swimming, hiking and climbing, horseback riding and horse camping, hunting, interpretive programs, off-highway vehicle use in designated areas, picnicking, visitor center resources, and wildlife viewing plus options for staying overnight in fire lookouts or cabins elsewhere in the forest. Practical matters to keep in mind: there are no reservations for this site, fees are handled at time of arrival (or via Scan and Pay where offered), and because facilities and cell coverage can be limited in remote forest settings you should plan and carry necessities accordingly and check current conditions or seasons with the forest office or Recreation.gov before you go.
