CHEQUAMEGON-NICOLET NATIONAL FOREST
Open in Google Maps ↗
Spearhead Point sits along the shady shoreline of the 411-acre Mondeaux Flowage at about 1,140 feet elevation, offering small family-oriented campsites with wide views of the lake that are uncommon elsewhere in the forest. The campground contains 26 total campsites; all 26 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, though there are no electrical or water hookups, so RV travelers should plan to be self-contained. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and the loop is served by accessible vault toilets and drinking water. A few sites have small docks you can use for fishing or landing a boat, and the nearby Mondeaux Picnic Area just a short drive provides a concession stand, coin-operated showers, a boat ramp and a pay phone. Recreation centers on the water: boating (boats with and without motors are allowed), swimming and fishing anglers commonly find pike, largemouth bass and bluegill, though the flowage is shallow in places so boaters should use caution. Hiking is easy to add into a visit via a nearby segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, and the broader Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest supports mountain biking, horseback riding, off-highway vehicle routes, hunting and abundant wildlife viewing for those who want to explore further. Some campsites at Spearhead Point are managed on a first-come, first-served basis, so check the forest's recreation page before you go for current reservation and fee details; the campground is reached from the Medford/Westboro area via county highways and a short stretch of forest road roughly 20 miles north of Medford and about 10 miles from the town of Westboro.
