Goodell Creek Campground sits along the banks of the Skagit River at milepost 119 on State Route 20, a short walk from the small town of Newhalem and within easy reach of the park's west-side services. The facility is compact but well-equipped: 18 individual campsites are configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, and the campground also offers two separate group sites for larger parties. Paved roads lead into the loop, and each campsite includes a picnic table, metal fire ring and a bear-proof food storage box; the campground provides drinking water, vault toilets, trash and recycling. Because the river and creek draw wildlife Pacific salmon migrate here and bald eagles return to the shores in winter you'll want to use the provided bear boxes and follow posted food-storage rules. For facility-specific questions, seasonal openings, or current reservation and fee information, call (360) 854-7200 or check with park staff before you go. From your campsite you can step onto a network of nearby trails that thread through an old-growth forest of western redcedar, western hemlock and Douglas-fir; the River Loop Trail, Trail of the Cedars and Rock Shelter Trail are all accessible from the connecting path to Newhalem Campground. The campground also has a raft launch for boating access to the Skagit and Newhalem Creek, and anglers regularly fish for salmon and other species where the river carries cold glacial melt from the Cascades. While camping here you're in the ecological heart of the North Cascades a region of jagged, glacier-topped peaks and shifting climate-driven conditions and the broader park offers additional opportunities for auto touring, biking, climbing, paddling, horseback riding and longer backcountry treks. The North Cascades Visitor Center near Newhalem runs seasonally (generally May through September) and is a convenient spot for maps, exhibits and a passport stamp before you set out.
