“Wonderful campground set in the river. Many spots to set up tents. Bathroom spotless. Campsites a picked up bit of micro trash. No bugs!”
“This camping area is so peaceful and serene. Have a small or big group along and a lot of the woods and river to yourself. No showers. Decent vault toilet areas. Well kept campground. ”

Excelsior Group Camp sits just off the Mt. Baker Highway (State Route 542) in the north Cascades, a short drive east of the small community of Glacier and placed close enough to the North Fork of the Nooksack River that you can hear the river's rush from camp. The campground is a convenient jumping-off point for the Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest recreational network: day hikes such as Horseshoe Bend (accessible from nearby Douglas Fir Campground) trace old-growth forest and river rapids, while the Skyline Divide Trail climbs into high meadows with extended views of glacier-clad Mt. Baker and surrounding peaks. Summer and early fall are the prime seasons here for hiking, fishing and picnicking in the Heather Meadows and Mt. Baker Wilderness areas, and the broader forest beyond the campground supports a long list of activities from auto touring and biking along the scenic byway to wildlife viewing and winter sports at higher elevations. Wildlife in the corridor includes five native salmon species, elk, bald eagles, black-tailed deer and black bears, so plan accordingly for food storage and wildlife awareness. The campground itself contains two large group sites (total campsites: 2), each designed to accommodate up to 50 people and set up to take both RVs and tents. Site A is the loop at the end of the driveway and features a group fire ring plus picnic tables and individual fire pits at the tent sites; Site B is the first site on the left after you enter the gated access road and also provides picnic tables and fire pits. Vault toilets are provided for basic facilities, but no other services are listed on site, so bring water, supplies and preparedness for backcountry conditions. The campground is reached from the Mt. Baker Highway roughly seven miles past Glacier near milepost 40; the access road leads through a gated entrance. For facility-specific information such as current access conditions, reservations or other operational details call the Mt. Baker Ranger District at (360) 386-8214.
