Douglas Fir Campground sits on the west side of the Mt. Baker Highway (SR 542), just after the bridge over the North Fork Nooksack River, roughly 35 miles east of Bellingham and a couple of miles past the town of Glacier. The site collection totals 25 campsites: 22 are configured for both RVs and tents and three are tent-only. Individual sites include picnic tables, campfire rings and tent pads; several sites are set right at the river's edge while others are shaded beneath a mature mixed conifer canopy. Basic facilities are provided vault toilets and drinking water and a historic sheltered picnic area built by the Civilian Conservation Corps is available for reservation. The campground accepts both tent and RV camping, and its compact size makes it a quiet base for day hikes and river access rather than a large service campground. The campground is best known as a launch point for north Cascades recreation: Horseshoe Bend Trail follows the highway and river through old-growth forest to whitewater views and a popular rafting put-in, while the more strenuous Skyline Divide Trail climbs from forest into open meadows with long views of glacier-draped Mt. Baker. Experienced kayakers can be seen on the river's rapids upstream, and Heather Meadows, other Mt. Baker Wilderness routes and the northern approaches to North Cascades National Park are all within a reasonable drive for backpacking and photography. Wildlife in the area includes salmon runs in the river, elk, black-tailed deer, bald eagles and migratory birds, with black bears present in the surrounding forests. The campground is most active in summer and early fall check Recreation.gov or call the Mt. Baker Ranger District at (360) 386-8214 for current openings, fees and seasonal information; note that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify that reservation.
