“Always a great experience at Winhall. First time in a lean to and enjoyed the change. Recent flooding has me worried we won’t beable to return in summer/fall 2023. Bathrooms may be ready for a revamp, but they are always clean. Hosts are friendly and helpful. ”
“Our site was flooded which made it difficult to park our RV in a dry area. As a courtesy, the host should have told us when we registered that it was and that there were other sites available.”

Important notice: Winhall Brook Camping Area is closed for the entire 2024 recreation season because of damage from the 2023 floods and planned infrastructure upgrades; a tentative reopening is scheduled for May 16, 2025. When open, the campground sits in the Green Mountains near South Londonderry at 919 Winhall Station Road, about seven miles from Ball Mountain Lake and reachable by a short drive north from Route 30/100. The site inventory includes 111 campsites in total 97 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 14 tent-only sites and a subset of sites (S6 S28) offer electric and water hookups. Basic amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, a dump station and firewood for sale at the contact station; campers also find three playgrounds, four horseshoe pits, a basketball court and a volleyball court. Day-use entry is free, some facilities require fees, and reservation and cancellation policies follow Recreation.gov rules, so call the contact station at (802) 824-4570 or the park information line at (802) 874-4881 for current details and to confirm opening dates. The setting leans toward outdoors-focused recreation: Winhall Brook and the West River run through broad grassy meadows framed by northern hardwood forest, and anglers will find brook, rainbow and brown trout in the streams while Ball Mountain Lake part of the Connecticut River Anadromous Fish Restoration Program is stocked with Atlantic salmon and supports smallmouth bass and additional trout fishing. There's a car-top boat launch and shore fishing access at the lake, and the 16-mile West River Trail follows parts of the old West River Railroad connecting South Londonderry, Jamaica and Townshend for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing; hiking routes near the campground also lead to Angel Falls and Hamilton Falls viewpoints. Seasonal rhythm is strong here: summer brings hikers, bikers and paddlers, while winter opens the trail network for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing; the dam releases scheduled the first weekend in May and the last weekend in September create whitewater runs used by rafters and kayakers. Wildlife is plentiful expect to see deer, occasional moose, songbirds and raptors and the campground's mix of facilities and riverside access makes it a practical base for both active days on the water and quieter nature watching.
