Hapgood Pond Recreation Area sits beside a 12-acre pond in an eight-acre clearing within the northeastern section of Green Mountain National Forest, about 13 miles east of Manchester, Vermont (follow Route 11 into the village of Peru and north on Hapgood Pond Road). The campground contains 30 family campsites in total 26 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 4 tent-only sites each outfitted with a picnic table, a campfire ring with grill, a parking spur and a cleared tent pad. Vault toilets and drinking water are available in the day-use/campground area, and two group picnic shelters (each able to hold up to 35 people) provide covered space with tables and grills and can be reserved. Sites 9 28 are available for reservation while the remaining sites are first-come, first-served; check the Forest Service website or local office for current fees, seasonal openings and reservation windows. Outdoor activity at Hapgood centers on the pond and its short trail network: the Forest Service maintains a managed swim beach the only designated swim beach in the Green Mountain National Forest a fishing pier on the south shore, and a carry-down launch for non-motorized boats at the pond's south end, making it a popular spot for canoeing, kayaking, fishing and swimming. A roughly one-mile Hapgood Pond Trail starts in the day-use area and loops along the pond's north edge to the dam, with a short spur that follows a stream through woods; younger campers also have a large play field for Frisbee and ball games. Beyond Hapgood, the larger forest offers extensive recreation opportunities auto touring, biking, hiking (including access to nationally designated trails), horseback riding, picnicking, wildlife viewing and winter sports and the town of Manchester is a short drive away for restaurants, shops and small museums such as the American Museum of Fly Fishing.
