Stony Fork Campground sits at about 2,400 feet in a quiet Appalachian valley at the foot of Big Walker Mountain, where the East Fork of Stony Fork Creek threads between pines and hardwoods. The creek is a constant soundtrack here and provides opportunities for trout fishing and easy water play close to many sites. A one-mile Stony Fork Nature Trail passes through groves of pine and hardwood, and the campground's loop road is a popular short walk; for longer outings, the roughly 5-mile Seven Sisters Trail departs from the campground and climbs to the top of Little Walker Mountain before linking to the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway. The byway itself is just beyond the campground and is a rewarding drive in spring when rhododendron, azalea and mountain laurel bloom, and in fall when ridgelines turn red and gold several overlooks along the route frame views that include Mount Rogers and a patchwork of nearby valleys. Practical comforts at Stony Fork are straightforward and family-friendly: the campground has 49 sites, all suitable for both RVs and tents, with paved parking spurs and most sites offering electrical hookups; warm showers, flush toilets and volunteer hosts round out the services. A horseshoe pit on site provides a low-key activity for families, and within a short drive visitors can reach the Appalachian Trail (within about 10 miles) and an outdoor shooting range a few miles away. The campground is about a 10-mile drive from Wytheville, VA, accessible from I-77 at Exit 47 onto local Route 717. Fees, seasonal openings and reservation policies can change, so check the U.S. Forest Service or recreation.gov for current information before you go; seasonal conditions can also affect trail and road access.
