“The campground and campsite were very good. We had a wonderful time and had the campground to ourselves with sparse campers given we were there during weekdays. The bathrooms were clean and nice”

Oak Ridge Campground sits inside Prince William Forest Park about 35 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., in a large swath of Piedmont forest that drains the Quantico Creek watershed. The campground is quiet and heavily wooded, with geological outcrops, winding creeks and small man-made lakes nearby that give you plenty of places to explore beyond your campsite. Hikers can step directly onto the park's trail network 37 miles of footpaths with the South Valley, Oak Ridge and Farms to Forest trails beginning at the campground's entrance. Cyclists will appreciate low-traffic paved roads (21 miles total, including a 12-mile Scenic Drive) and a dedicated 3-mile family-friendly paved bike lane that leads to the campground; there are also about 10 miles of gravel fire roads for more rugged mountain biking. For anglers, roughly 18 miles of streams and two small lakes support bluegill, pumpkinseed, largemouth bass and channel catfish, and orienteering enthusiasts can pick from 30 mapped courses scattered through the park. The broader park preserves roughly 15,000 acres and supports a rich set of wildlife and plants a good place for wildlife viewing and seasonal changes from spring wildflowers to fall color. Oak Ridge has 99 campsites organized into three loops (Loop A: 42 sites; Loop B: 24 sites; Loop C: 33 sites) and accommodates both tents and many RVs: 36 sites are configured for both RVs and tents and 63 are tent-only. Each site provides a parking spur, picnic table, grill and lantern post; every loop has restrooms with sinks and flush toilets and Loop B also includes showers. There are vehicle-size limits to note: recreational vehicles may be up to 32 feet long and 12 feet high, while trailers and fifth wheels are limited to 26 feet long and 12 feet high. The campground is generally open March through November be aware that comfort stations in Loops A and C are winterized in the early part of November while Loop B's station remains open until the camp closure (first of December). Large group camping is not permitted. Access is only through the park's main entrance on VA-619/Joplin Road (GPS devices sometimes suggest closed gravel service roads), and using 18511 Joplin Road, Triangle, VA 22172 will get you to the correct entrance; the campground sits about a 15 20 minute drive from that entrance. For current fees, reservation rules and up-to-date access or staffing information, check the National Park Service page or the park's reservation system before you go. Nearby points of interest include the National Museum of the Marine Corps and the Quantico base gate a mile from the park entrance, and the park sits roughly between Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania and Manassas battlefield sites for easy historic side trips.
