Zachery D ★ 4 · Oct 2025Very nice little campground. With campsites right along the creek. Love the fact that you can swim in the lake and paddle board. Fishing is good when it’s stocked. Then the hot water at the bathhouse is constant. Lol the only reason why it’s getting four stars is they just have one bathhouse for the camp. And the lake is a little bit of a walk from the campsite.
Jorge R ★ 5 · Oct 2025Being from Kansas and new to the camping world my wife and I have been skeptical about camping grounds. We absolutely loved our time at Cave Mountain Lake. We were very impressed with the bathrooms and facilities. We stayed at lot 35 which seems to be the furthest away from all other sites and we could not have picked a better space. Unfortunately we’re learning that it’s best to reserve a head of time so we couldn’t stay longer than a few days since that’s all the availability they had but we plan to go back. Les (one of the campground volunteers) was very nice and informative. Highly recommend this place especially if you’re new to this.
Chad W ★ 5 · Oct 2025great campsite and helpful volunteers

Cave Mountain Lake Family Camp sits in the Blue Ridge foothills of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest, centered on a 7-acre lake with a sandy swimming beach and several fishing piers. The lake and its 35-foot dam were built in the late 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and a broad grassy field rolls from the beach up into forested hills that frame the campground. A designated swim area makes summer dips straightforward, and anglers should note the season and permit rules: fishing is reserved for youth (15 and under) from April 1 through June 15, then opens to all anglers for the remainder of the season with a valid Virginia fishing license, trout stamp and National Forest stamp. Trails range from a short lakeside loop to mountain ridgeline hikes the Panther Knob Trail begins beside the group picnic shelter and skirts the lake to the dam, while the Wildcat Trail climbs from the upper camping loop near the volunteer host site and returns above the campground and longer outings are available on the nearby Appalachian Trail and in the James River Face and Thunder Ridge Wilderness areas. Birding, wildlife viewing and photography are productive along the water's edge and wooded trails. The campground has 40 reservable sites that accommodate both tents and RVs; each site includes a picnic table, lantern post and a campfire ring with grill, and sites are sized for up to eight people. Flush toilets and potable water spigots are located throughout the campground, and a bathhouse with warm showers sits across the road from Campsite #20. All camping requires a reservation in advance there are no first-come, first-serve sites and reservations are made through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777; the area has limited staffing, so for general questions call (540) 291-2188. The recreation area is easy to reach from I-81 near Natural Bridge and is about a 20-minute drive from historic Lexington; Natural Bridge State Park is roughly 8 miles away, offering the 215-foot Natural Bridge, six miles of trails, a Monacan Indian Village and Lace Falls. Beyond the campground, the broader national forest supports a wide range of activities including auto touring, biking, boating, climbing, horseback riding, OHV use, picnicking, hunting, interpretive programs and additional hiking and wildlife-viewing opportunities.
