“We stayed one night in a 21' Class B RV. The volunteer, Denise, who managed the campground that night was very kind to protect us from a neighboring RV that had a propane leak. She was quite kind. The campground was extremely quiet and not overly busy.”

Perched between the bases of two dominant peaks in the rolling hills along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Peaks of Otter Campground sits side-by-side with Abbott Lake, a clear 24-acre pond popular with anglers for smallmouth bass and bluegill. A mountain stream threads the nearby picnic area, and trails fan out from the campground to suit a range of outings a short, flat loop around the lake for easy walks, steeper climbs that scale the area's high summits, and meadow pockets that fill with wildflowers and migrating butterflies in spring and rich fall color later in the year. Wildlife sightings are common: white-tailed deer and wild turkey appear near campsites, while birds that use the mountain corridor pass through or breed locally; summer interpretive programs introduce visitors to the area's natural and cultural history. The Peaks of Otter Lodge and restaurant, Sharp Top Country Store (for snacks, firewood and ice), the restored Johnson Farm, and Aunt Polly's Ordinary sit within easy walking distance, and the campground is convenient to the Parkway itself about 26 miles north of Roanoke at Milepost 86, with local access from Bedford via Route 43. The campground's 138 sites are shaded under a thick canopy of trees and equipped with picnic tables, lantern poles, and campfire rings/grills; modern comfort comes from flush toilets, drinking water, and an on-site dump station. Of those sites, 50 accommodate RVs and 88 are tent sites, arranged across three loops: Loop A (44 sites), Loop B (45 sites), and Loop T (49 sites). Reservations are possible for a portion of the campground (advance booking is available for 60 sites); additional sites are kept for first-come, first-served campers and must be claimed in person at the campground kiosk. Beyond pitching a tent or parking an RV, this spot is ideal for auto touring the Parkway, biking nearby roads, picnicking by the lake, and using the campground as a base for fishing, hiking, historic-site visits, and wildlife viewing.
