Otter Creek Campground sits at the Blue Ridge Parkway's lowest elevation about 649 feet above sea level where a ribbon of Otter Creek threads through a quieter, more verdant valley than the high peaks farther north. The creek and nearby Otter Lake shape the campground's character: expect the constant murmur of moving water, rich early-morning and dusk wildlife activity (look for beaver lodges and dams on tributary streams), and clear views of the night sky that are less interrupted by elevation haze. Trails fan out directly from the site, including the Otter Creek Trail that leads to the James River Visitor Center, the short Otter Lake Loop for shoreline viewing, the interpretive Trail of Trees through a shaded drainage, and the Canal Lock Trail with access to a restored Battery Creek Lock and exhibits about the James River and Kanawha Canal. These elements make the spot a good base not only for camping but for fishing in Otter Lake, hiking, wildlife viewing, picnicking, and exploring the Parkway by car or bike; the visitor center adds a historic-and-cultural component that complements the outdoor activities. Practical details matter here: the campground has a total of 68 sites 23 designated for RV use and 45 for tents laid out in two loops (Loop A contains 23 sites; Loop B contains 45 sites). Sites come with grills, picnic tables and lantern posts, and the campground provides flush toilets, drinking water and a dump station. Reservation options are split: 39 sites can be reserved in advance while 29 campsites are held for first-come, first-served visitors; those FCFS sites are not tracked on Recreation.gov and must be claimed in person at the campground kiosk. Otter Creek is accessed from the Parkway near the James River area roughly a one-mile drive from the Parkway ramp with the site reachable from Lynchburg in about a 25-mile drive to the Parkway entrance or in roughly 16 miles along the Parkway from the Lexington/Buena Vista direction. For up-to-date seasonal openings, fees and exact reservation procedures consult Recreation.gov or the James River Visitor Center before you go.
