Sowell Creek sits on the east shore of Proctor Lake in the Cross Timbers region of central Texas, where broad grassy flats give way to stands of black willow and pockets of buttonbush along the waterline. The park's 62 campsites all configured to take either RVs or tents are arranged in five loops (7 sites in Loop 1, 13 in Loop 2, 10 in Loop 3, 11 in Loop 4, and 21 in Loop 5), and the park changes how many sites are available by season: during the busier April September months the park operates with 61 individual sites plus a group site, while the quieter October March period limits public availability to about 30 sites. Shade is limited across the open lawns, but views of the lake are frequent and several swim beaches and day-use picnic areas make it easy to spend long afternoons on the water. Anglers will find the lake's reputation well deserved Proctor is known statewide for strong populations of bass, crappie, catfish and especially hybrid striped bass and the park's two boat ramps and two fishing docks give straightforward access for both boaters and shore-bound fishermen. Facilities at Sowell Creek are set up to support extended stays: every campsite offers electric hookups (a mix of 50-, 30- and 20-amp), water and sewer connections and a covered picnic table, and the park provides flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station. Families will appreciate the playground, the multiple swim beaches, and the two day-use picnic areas, while naturalists and birders can explore shoreline habitat or drive a few miles to High Point Park for more than 10 miles of hiking and equestrian trails. The town of Comanche to the west supplies groceries, historical sites and antique shops for any resupply or sightseeing needs. Because fees and reservation rules can change, check the park's current reservation system and any access requirements before you go, but expect a straightforward lakeside camping experience geared toward fishing, boating, picnicking, water sports and wildlife viewing.
