What guests say

“Close to Blue Heron Mining Camp. A lot of history to see and learn about. Quiet campground.”

THOMAS F 4 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Lovely campground, peaceful and clean. No host on site, but it was fine. ”

Pam P 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Nice small campground. I love that the dish washing sink for tent campers is well maintained. The bear boxes to store coolers and food stuff is a big convenience. ”

About

Blue Heron Campground sits on the Kentucky side of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, part of the rugged Cumberland Plateau that spreads across roughly 125,000 acres of gorges, forested plateaus and sandstone formations. The campground is deliberately low-key and roomy: 45 total sites, of which 44 are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and one is RV-only. Sites are generous in size, shaded by mature trees and include picnic areas; many campers appreciate the combination of traditional woods camping with a few modern conveniences every loop has electric hookups, and the campground provides flush toilets and hot showers. The main channel of the Big South Fork is only a short drive away, so anglers and paddlers can be on the river without a long haul from camp, while the nearby landscape reveals cliffs, arches and chimney-like sandstone features carved by streams over millennia. Blue Heron is a good base for a wide range of Park activities: the recreation area's trail network supports mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding, and the broader park offers boating, paddling, climbing, fishing, wildlife viewing, picnicking and historic- and cultural-site visits. Within a few miles of the campground you can visit Blue Heron Mine (Mine 18), an outdoor museum where recorded voices from the town's 1950s residents bring the former mining community to life, and the Big South Fork Scenic Railway depot in Stearns is about nine miles away (more at https://bsfsry.com). Practical details such as current fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability change periodically, so check the National Park Service directions and campground pages for the latest information and access guidance before you go.
