Cages Bend Campground sits on the shoreline of Old Hickory Lake, a 22,500-acre reservoir fed by the Cumberland River that stretches about 97 miles northeast of Nashville. The campground's low-lying woodlands and open lakefront make it a good place for anglers Old Hickory has a long fishing pedigree (the 25-pound world-record walleye was taken from here in 1960) and largemouth bass, crappie and catfish are common targets from shore or boat. Boating and sailing are straightforward from the campground's boat ramp, swimmers will find access to the water here, and two fishing-only docks (one inside the campground and another by the ramp) give anglers extra spots to cast. Wildlife viewing and birding are easy pastimes too; white-tailed deer, migratory songbirds and waterfowl are frequently seen along the lake's edge, and the proximity roughly a 30-minute drive to downtown Nashville makes Cages Bend a convenient base for combining lakeside recreation with a trip into the city or a visit to nearby historic sites such as the Hermitage. The campground is compact but well-equipped: there are 42 campsites total, and each of those 42 sites is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents with electric and water hookups at every site; four sites meet accessibility standards. Family-friendly amenities include a playground, a group picnic shelter, showers and onsite laundry, and the boat ramp provides easy lake access for trailered boats. Practical reservation rules bear noting before you arrive: once a reservation is created there is a $10 fee to cancel and a $10 fee to change your site or dates; cancellations made the day before or up to the day after your arrival will be charged the first night's use fee, and no-shows incur a $20 fee plus the first night's use fee (if you booked a single night and are charged the first night's use fee, the $10 service fee is not applied). Also, no refunds for recreation use fees may be made at the project, so plan accordingly and check the reservation system for current availability and seasonal details.
