“I enjoyed my stay and the campground hosts were very helpful and friendly. I felt very comfortable there with them in charge. Thank you !”
“Great site, very clean area. Friendly staff. Over all quiet. Our campsite was on the river. The highway was loader than the river unfortunately, but still a great site. Verizon had zero service.”
“Thunder Rock is perfectly located for whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, fly fishing, and hiking. The campground hosts are exceptionally. Dave kept us all informed and insured the quiet enjoyment of our stay, which maximized our experience.”

Thunder Rock Campground sits on the banks of the Ocoee River just upriver from the Ocoee Whitewater Center and immediately behind TVA's Ocoee Powerhouse Number 3, placing you within easy reach of the river's rapids and the sound of water running through the gorge. The site inventory is small and straightforward: 38 campsites in total 34 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 4 tent-only sites. Most RV/tent sites are sized for smaller trailers and pop-ups (under about 20 feet), and electrical hookups are very limited only site 9 offers a 30-amp electric connection for rigs under 20 feet. Each campsite comes with a picnic table, grill, and lantern post; water hydrants are spaced through the loop and the bathhouses provide flush toilets and warm showers. A campground host is stationed at the entrance next to the main bathhouse, and a Forest Service map/guide is available online for layout and regulations. Outdoor access is the campground's strongest draw: it's an established base for whitewater paddlers and rafters because the Ocoee put-in and the Olympic-era Whitewater Center are a short hop downstream, and trailhead parking at Thunder Rock puts you on the Tanasi trail system (roughly 30 miles of mixed hiking and mountain-bike routes reached via Thunder Rock Express, Dry Pond Lead, or the Rhododendron Trail) as well as providing routes onto the Benton-McKaye Trail. Beyond the campground itself, Cherokee National Forest offers a wide range of pursuits hiking, biking, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing, auto touring and more so you can pair an easy river day with longer backcountry treks. Practical note on costs and reservations: all sites carry an $18 cancellation/reservation fee, and the standard electric site fee is $20 per night ($15 per night with a federal recreation discount pass). Because Thunder Rock is popular with both paddlers and trail users, plan and reserve early during peak seasons and consult the Forest Service campground map before you arrive.
