Chilhowee Campground sits within the Chilhowee Recreation Area of the Cherokee National Forest on Forest Road 77/Oswald Dome Road, about a seven-mile climb up a narrow, winding mountain road from Highway 64/411. Because GPS often routes visitors via Benton Springs Road an unpaved, hazardous approach for trailers and larger rigs plan your arrival using Forest Service Road 77 and allow extra time and caution for the ascent; inexperienced RV drivers may find the drive and campsite circulation challenging. The campground contains 59 sites total: 48 configured for RV use and 11 tent sites, organized across six loops (A: 12 sites, B: 11, C: 8, D: 12, E: 7, F: 9). Many sites offer electrical hookups, and Loops A and B include walk-in tent sites with electricity. Each site has a picnic table, grill, and lantern post; bathhouses with flush toilets and warm showers are located in every loop and in the day-use area, water hydrants are spread through the campground, and an RV dump station sits at the end of E Loop. Because the facility sits up on the ridge, expect typical mountain road widths and turning radii plan vehicle length and maneuvering accordingly. The recreation area around the campground is a concentrated hub for outdoor activity without long drives: McKamy Lake, a seven-acre waterbody with a staffed swim area and sand beach, offers shoreline fishing and non-gasoline boating, plus a group picnic area and a day-use bathhouse. From the campground gates you can access roughly 25 miles of hiking and mountain-bike trails in the Chilhowee Trails System, with a moderate 1.5-mile out-and-back to Benton Falls and several roadside overlooks that open up broad mountain and valley views. Wildlife is plentiful here, and the trails and shorelines are prime for birding and photographing deer or smaller forest species tread lightly and pack out what you pack in. For activities beyond the immediate recreation area, the Cherokee National Forest provides opportunities such as auto touring, horseback riding and horse camping, fishing, off-highway-vehicle routes, interpretive programs, and world-class whitewater rafting on the nearby Ocoee and Hiwassee Rivers. For current fees, reservation rules, and seasonal openings, check the Forest Service website or contact the Chilhowee Recreation Area office before you go.
