About

Cottonwood Recreation Area sits just downstream of Gavins Point Dam on the western shore of Lake Yankton, a smaller, calmer counterpoint to the much larger Lewis and Clark Lake upstream (the main reservoir impounded by Gavins Point covers roughly 31,400 acres and more than 90 miles of shoreline). The campground itself contains 75 reservable sites, each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and equipped with electrical hookups; two modern shower houses with flush toilets serve campers. Within the campground you'll find a playground, horseshoe pits and a picnic shelter, while the adjacent day-use area adds a large reservable picnic shelter, an accessible fishing dock, a disc golf course and a boat ramp for easy access to Lake Yankton's paddling and quiet-water boating. An RV dump station sits just north of Cottonwood off Toe Road, and the popular Training Dike Day-Use Area a short drive away provides a sandy swimming beach on Lake Yankton and access to the Missouri River downstream of the dam. Recreation at Cottonwood is a mix of water-focused activity and trail-based exploration: Lake Yankton (about 250 acres) is excellent for kayaking, canoeing and family fishing, while Lewis and Clark Lake supports larger-scale boating, sailing and water-skiing. Paved, multi-use trails connect the campground with other recreation areas; there's a paved route from Yankton to Gavins Point, a multi-use loop around the Gavins Point area and the Calumet Bluff hiking trail near the visitor center for those seeking steeper river-valley views. Wildlife is a constant presence waterfowl, bald eagles, whitetail deer and wild turkeys are commonly seen and winter brings opportunities for ice fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the broader project area. Sites are reservable through Recreation.gov (or by calling 1-877-444-6777); for facility-specific questions contact the Lewis and Clark Visitor Center at (402) 667-2546 and check Recreation.gov for current fees, reservation rules and cancellation policies.
