Cottonwood Springs Campground sits about 5 miles west of Hot Springs on U.S. Highway 18, set among the rugged hills and stands of evergreen that characterize the southern Black Hills. The campground occupies part of the public lands created when Cottonwood Springs Dam was completed in 1969; roughly 600 acres of water and upland provide the backdrop for short walks from many sites to exposed rock, trees and lake views. There are 17 primitive campsites in total each listed as suitable for both RVs and tents but there are no electrical or water hookups at the sites themselves, so plan to use onboard batteries and bring your own water containers. Potable water and flush toilets are available near the loop, a camp host is on site during the season to answer questions, and a small playground provides an easy diversion for kids. Access to the lake is about a mile's drive from the campsite, where picnic shelters, grills and another set of restrooms are located; the boat ramp is steep and limits boat size, so larger gas-powered craft are not practical. If you come to Cottonwood Springs for activity, the lake supports quiet boating and fishing canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and small boats with electric motors are common, and anglers pursue largemouth bass, rainbow trout and various panfish (note that no gas motors are permitted and fishing and hunting follow South Dakota regulations). A non-motorized gravel path through the wildlife area makes for short hikes and is mentioned as a place where pets can be off leash, while photographers and wildlife viewers will find frequent opportunities among the hills and shoreline. Archery hunting is allowed only in designated areas; other on-site recreation includes picnicking, a playground and a specialized archery site near the water. Reservations and fee payments are handled through Recreation.gov (or by calling 1-877-444-6777), and facility-specific questions can be directed to (605) 745-5476; reservation changes and cancellations are also managed via Recreation.gov according to their policies.
