Cold Brook Campground sits under the pines and rolling rock outcrops of the Southern Black Hills, less than a mile north of Hot Springs and the conveniences of town. The focal point is Cold Brook Lake, a roughly 33-acre impoundment created when Cold Brook Dam was completed in the early 1950s; the dam and surrounding lands now provide about 450 acres of public space. The lake's clear water invites swimmers and snorkelers at the sandy beach, while non-gas-powered craft canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are the usual traffic on calm mornings and evenings (use of gas motors is prohibited). Anglers chase largemouth bass, northern pike, catfish, carp, rainbow trout and assorted panfish, and in winter the lake and park reopen for ice fishing, skating and cross-country skiing. On the campground's north edge a two-track trail winds through a designated wildlife area, making for a short bike or morning-walk loop with solid chances to spot deer, songbirds and other local wildlife; archery hunting is allowed only in marked zones and state hunting and fishing regulations are enforced. The campground itself is small and straightforward: 12 primitive sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, with no electrical or water hookups at individual sites. Potable water is provided near the main part of the loop across from the camp host, who is on hand to answer questions; basic conveniences in the recreation area include a boat ramp, picnic shelters, vault toilets, a playground, grills and permanent fire rings. If you want to plan ahead, make reservations and manage cancellations through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777, and for facility-specific questions call (605) 745-5476. Cold Brook's location also puts you within easy reach of larger attractions of the Black Hills region Black Hills National Forest, Wind Cave and Jewel Cave national parks, The Mammoth Site and Hot Springs' Evans Plunge so it works well as a quiet lakeside base for day trips as well as a simple, nature-focused overnight stay.
