Oreville Campground sits on a quiet hillside about 4 5 miles south of Hill City on US Highway 16/385, just north of the Crazy Horse Memorial, with campsites set among aspen groves, mature ponderosa pines and grassy clearings. The small campground contains 14 sites in total; every site is configured to accommodate both tents and RVs (trailers are welcome), and many sites are roomy enough to feel private from neighboring camps. Basic amenities include picnic tables, metal campfire rings, vault toilets and a potable water spigot; there are no electrical hookups, so bring your own water containers, battery or solar power and plan accordingly. For fee details, reservation availability, or other facility-specific questions (including seasonal openings), call the campground office at (605) 574-4402; note that the campground's stated policy is that no refunds are issued for weather or related events. The surrounding Black Hills National Forest opens up a wide range of outdoor options directly from the campground: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle (OHV) use on moderate terrain, plus fishing and wildlife viewing. Cyclists and hikers can reach the George S. Mickelson Trail nearby a packed-gravel corridor that follows an old railroad line for more than 100 miles, crossing four tunnels, over 100 converted railroad bridges and 15 trailheads while longer day hikes can take you to Black Elk Peak, where exposed granite and the old Harney lookout tower afford wide views. A short drive brings you to Jewel Cave (the park lists 159.29 miles of mapped passage), as well as other regional highlights such as Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park. Wildlife in the area ranges from bighorn sheep on steeper slopes to elk, deer and pronghorn in forests and meadows; raptors including bald eagles and peregrine falcons are commonly seen along streams and lakes. Use Oreville as a straightforward, low-service basecamp for exploring the Black Hills' trails, scenic drives and outdoor experiences.
