Charlotte W ★ 5 · Jul 2024The campground had an ample field for many tents. We stuck near the boundaries because of the morning and afternoon sunshine, which was quite hot in July. The creek has a swimming hole across the road from the campground, which our kids enjoyed very much. The public trail that starts at the back of the parking lot was used only a few times during our weeklong stay and the folks passing through were very respectful of our camp site. We were very happy to be a little isolated from the Grayback Campground as our group of kids was still awake after 10pm, and being across the road meant we were not disturbing other campers and could be more relaxed. Drinking water was readily available. The toilets were not flushing, but were clean and maintenance came by twice during our stay to keep them that way. We were super happy to be halfway between Cave Junction the town and the Oregon Caves Park. It made our visit there very easy, and the caves are spectacular.

CHINQUAPIN GROUP CAMPGROUND
Open in Google Maps ↗
Chinquapin Group Campground sits on the former Camp Oregon Caves CCC site and is anchored by a surviving Grayback Ranger Station built around 1936; a large Port-Orford cedar near the back of the parking area was named the 56th Oregon State Heritage Tree in 2011 and serves as a tangible link to the camp's Depression-era history. The site contains a single group site (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) that accepts both RVs and tents, and the campground's open meadow makes it well suited to reunions, church or school groups, and scouting outings. Practical amenities include potable water, picnic tables and fire rings located at three locations within the campground, plus a restroom at the back of the parking area; there is no electricity available. The Grayback Interpretive Trail (#1204) runs alongside Grayback Creek adjacent to the campground, and hikers on that loop may occasionally use the campground toilet. You'll find creekside trails, swimming spots in Grayback Creek, marshy meadows, spring wildflowers, and opportunities for wildlife viewing and berry picking right from the campground, while Oregon Caves National Monument lies about 10 miles farther east on Highway 46 for cave tours. The campground is reached from Highway 46 roughly 10.5 miles east of Cave Junction, tucked behind the Cedar Guard Station and accessed through the gate immediately beside the station; because policies, fees and seasonal availability can change, check current reservation rules and any required permits with the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest before you go. The broader forest offers a wide range of activities hiking, fishing, horseback riding, auto touring, winter sports and more so Chinquapin is a good base for both low-key creekside days and longer explorations of the Siskiyous.
