“It is a nice campground and area. The only issue with our visit was a dead animal in the dumpster that was rather unpleasant for all campsites downwind. Campsite 15 is listed as an RV site, but there was plenty of room for two tents.”

South Ruby Campground sits at about 6,000 feet on the upslope above Ruby Lake, with views into Ruby Valley and the riparian marshes that make the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge one of the region's richer bird habitats. From campsites shaded by scattered pinyon pine and juniper you can watch waterfowl and marsh birds that use the refuge more than 220 species have been recorded there, including canvasback ducks, trumpeter swans, greater sandhill cranes and sage grouse and it's not unusual to spot mule deer or pronghorn on the nearby uplands. Ruby Lake itself is visible from the campground and is fished for largemouth bass and several species of trout; the refuge headquarters, two miles north, has visitor information and trailheads that link into longer routes. The campground also provides easy access to historic sites along the Hastings Cutoff and Pony Express corridor, an interpretive trail at Fort Ruby, the southern end of the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail within reasonable driving distance, and dirt routes from Harrison and Overland passes popular with jeeps, OHVs and mountain bikes. The campground contains 35 sites in total: 16 sites set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and 19 RV sites, with picnic tables and campfire rings at each site. Vault toilets and drinking water are supplied during the main summer season (generally early May through late September), and garbage service is available through the summer months; during the off season camping is first-come, first-served for a reduced fee with no water, and only campsites, picnic tables, fire rings and vault toilets are provided. The lower loop typically remains open most winters but may close depending on local conditions, so it's a good idea to call the local office for current status, seasonal fees and reservation details before you go. For access, plan to approach the area south of Wells on U.S. 93, continuing on State Route 229 and then State Route 767/County Road 788 into Ruby Valley a drive of roughly 70 80 miles from Wells that moves you from high desert into the wet meadows and mountain backdrop around the refuge.
