“We were surprised by the sheer beauty of this area. It would have been nice to have hook-ups but it’s understandable that they don’t since it’s in a remote canyon. The road in was paved. Hope to stay here again.”
“Simple campground in a beautiful place. No bells and whistles offered or needed. Thomas Canyon hike a delight. 5 miles round trip in the Ruby Mountains. ”
“We love this campground. It’s a relaxing place to come to get away, quiet and peaceful. Each time we stayed here it was extremely clean. There are lots of hikes available.”

Thomas Canyon Campground sits at about 7,200 feet at the mouth of Thomas Canyon in Lamoille Canyon, part of the Ruby Mountains roughly 30 miles south of Elko. The creek that runs through the site, Lamoille Creek, is a well-known local trout stream brook and wild rainbow trout are commonly pursued by fly-fishermen and the Thomas Canyon Trail begins right at the campground, climbing past several waterfalls, through an alpine meadow and up into a glacial cirque. The canyon road itself draws people for scenic driving and road biking, and walls of the canyon provide numerous rock-climbing lines; horseback trails and routes to alpine lakes and high vistas radiate through the surrounding National Forest. Groves of aspen and cottonwood shade the campground and make for vivid fall color, while the wider Ruby Mountains offer wildlife viewing and the kind of high-elevation terrain that can host winter sports when conditions allow. The campground contains 39 sites in total: 31 sites are suitable for both RVs and tents, seven are RV-only, and one is tent-only. Individual sites come with a picnic table, campfire ring and grill, and some have tent pads; vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided during the main season. Note that there is a limited first-come, first-served period typically late September through late October during which no campground host is on-site and water facilities are shut off for fall/winter, so services and access can vary with seasonal conditions. For current conditions, availability, and any fee or reservation details, contact the local Humboldt-Toiyabe district office before you go; the campground is reached via State Route 227 and the Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway about eight miles up the canyon road.
