Timber Creek Campground sits high in Duck Creek Basin on the Schell Creek Range at about 8,500 feet, surrounded by a dense mix of Engelmann spruce, aspen and white fir that throws good shade in summer and vivid color in autumn. The campground fronts Timber Creek, a perennial stream where anglers try for rainbow and brook trout, and a trailhead for the High Schells Wilderness is only a short walk up the road, putting multi-day hikes and peak climbs within easy reach. The Duck Creek Basin also contains the 30-mile Success Loop Scenic Drive for a slow loop through high-desert and mountain scenery, and access to the Ranger OHV Trail just below the campground opens routes for off-highway vehicles, horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking on forest roads and singletrack. There are eight campsites at Timber Creek, and each is configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; sites include picnic and serving tables, a campfire ring and a grill. The campground provides vault toilets and potable drinking water, but there is no trash collection it's a pack-it-in, pack-it-out area. Road access is via the Duck Creek Basin approach off State Route 486 north of McGill (and roughly 25 miles from Ely), with the final few miles on a forest road; because of the elevation and unpaved access, check with Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Headquarters for current road conditions, seasonal availability, fees and reservation procedures before you go. Beyond the immediate campground you'll find other regional draws such as Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park, Cave Lake State Park and the Northern Nevada Railway in Ely, and the broader Humboldt-Toiyabe offers biking, hunting, wildlife viewing and winter-sport opportunities depending on season.
