Ward Mountain Campground (Murray Summit) sits at about 7,400 feet on the lower slopes of Ward Mountain, roughly 10 miles southwest of Ely off Highway 6 and a couple of hundred miles north of Las Vegas by way of Highways 93 and 318. The site is set among pinyon pine and juniper that break up the open high-desert views and give many sites a measure of privacy and shade. There are 33 campsites in total: 25 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 8 RV-only sites, plus three large group sites that can accommodate 100 or more people. Every individual campsite includes a picnic table, campfire ring and grill; you'll find vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection in the campground but no electrical hookups, so RV users should plan on self-contained power. A campground host is on-site during the peak summer season; for current fees, reservation options and seasonal access, check in with the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Headquarters before you go. The campground is the main access point for Ward Mountain Recreation Area's trail network, with multiple trailheads across the campground and the principal trailhead at the eastern edge. Trails provide miles of options for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, and there's space and access for horse camping as well. For water-based outings, Comins Lake is about 13 miles away and Cave Lake State Park under 20 miles, both popular for trout and bass fishing and small-boat recreation; Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park is roughly 26 miles from the campground if you want to add a short history hike to your trip. Wildlife viewing, hunting, off-highway vehicle riding and seasonal winter sports are all possible in the broader Humboldt-Toiyabe area confirm road and trail conditions with the forest office in winter so the site works well as a base whether you plan a single-night stop or a multi-day outdoor itinerary.
