About

At 8,475 feet above sea level, Black Canyon Campground sits among stands of pine, aspen and fir where a mix of sun and shade makes summer days warm and evenings crisp a convenient mountain escape just about seven miles northeast of Santa Fe along State Route 475 (Hyde Park Road). The facility has 36 total campsites: 30 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 6 tent-only sites, with several designated walk-to sites for tent camping. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and most sites are accessible; accessible vault toilets are provided. The highway into the campground is paved, but there is currently no potable water on site, so bring your own; vehicle owners can use a dump station at the adjacent Hyde Memorial State Park. Staffing at the location is limited, and a few sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so call (505) 753-7331 for the latest information on availability, fees and any access questions before you go. Recreation is immediate and varied: a pleasant 1.5-mile loop trail runs through and around the campground, and additional trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding fan out from the area and along Highway 475. For longer backcountry trips, the Pecos Wilderness is about eight miles away, offering routes into higher peaks, forested groves, canyons and valleys; along the highway above and below Black Canyon you'll also find picnic areas and more trailheads. In winter the corridor supports both Nordic and alpine skiing, and across the Santa Fe National Forest visitors can also pursue fishing, picnicking and overnight stays in fire-lookout cabins where available. The campground's combination of accessible, well-equipped sites, high-elevation forest setting, and close proximity to Santa Fe's galleries and services makes it a practical base for both short stays and longer explorations of the Sangre de Cristo foothills.
