Field Tract Campground sits on the banks of the Pecos River about 10 miles north of the village of Pecos, positioned on the right-hand side of the road as you head into the canyon. The setting is a forested corridor of the Pecos Canyon framed by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where stands of cottonwood and conifer offer shade and wildlife viewing; bald eagles are known to pass through the canyon in winter. This is a medium-sized, family-friendly site with a total of 15 campsites: 12 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites. Six of the 15 units include three-sided shelters for extra protection from sun or wind, and campsites are rated suitable for trailers up to 22 feet in length. Basic amenities on site include potable drinking water, portable toilets, picnic tables and grills; the campground listing does not specify electrical hookups or a dump station. Recreational opportunities concentrate on the river and the surrounding forest: Field Tract offers direct access to excellent Pecos River fishing, nearby picnic spots that shift scenery as you move along the banks, and multiple canyon trails that connect to trailheads leading into the Pecos Wilderness. Rock climbers will find climbing opportunities within roughly 10 miles, and the wider Santa Fe National Forest supports biking, hiking, winter sports and overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins. The information provided here does not include fees, reservation requirements or seasonal opening dates those details change year to year so check the Santa Fe National Forest website or contact the local ranger district (or Recreation.gov) before you go. Because there are only 15 sites, plan ahead: arrive early in the day or verify availability if you're traveling with a trailer or during peak seasons.
