“Beautiful area. Our site was close to the entrance of the Valley of Fires trail so many visitors walked right thru our campsite, some going between our camper and hookups! If you stay here stay at a site with higher numbers, away from the trail entrance. ”
“Perfect location, quiet and walks were very nice”
“Quiet, nice sites, good facilities We really enjoyed our stay!”

Valley of Fires Recreation Area sits directly beside the Malpais lava flow created when Little Black Peak erupted roughly 5,000 years ago; that flow extended about 44 miles into the Tularosa Basin and today measures four to six miles across, up to 160 feet thick and covers roughly 125 square miles one of the youngest lava fields on the continent. The Bureau of Land Management operates the site, located about four miles west of Carrizozo on U.S. Highway 380, and maintains 27 campsites in all: 19 RV sites and 8 tent sites. RV campers will find 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups, water hookups, two accessible RV sites, picnic shelters and tables at each site, pedestal grills, and campfire rings at most sites; tent campers have dedicated tent pads and the same picnic amenities. A centrally located restroom/shower house (showers are included with camping fees; non-campers may use showers for $6) and accessible restrooms, scattered water spigots, trash receptacles, and an on-site dump station (included for campers, or $15 for non-campers) keep logistics simple, while two accessible group shelters are available for rental. The small bookstore/visitor center on site offers maps, interpretive information and a few keepsakes to help plan hikes and wildlife viewing. The park's character comes from the stark lava surface that, from a distance, looks like barren rock but up close supports a surprising desert community: Chihuahuan Desert wildflowers, cactus, juniper/cedar patches and scrub brush, with wildlife ranging from roadrunners, quail, cottontails, mule deer and barbary sheep to bats and a rich bird list that includes great horned and burrowing owls, turkey vultures, hawks, cactus wrens and golden eagles. The 3/4-mile Malpais Nature Trail is paved and accessible, giving an intimate look at the lava texture and associated plants, and the recreation area offers hiking, picnicking, interpretive programs, wildlife viewing and both full-service and primitive camping options for RVs and tents. If you want to explore farther afield, the Carrizozo Land Partnership provides vehicle-pass access to adjacent BLM lands, Fort Stanton National Conservation Area with 93 miles of trails lies about 27 miles to the east, and towns such as Capitan (24 miles), Lincoln (37 miles) and Ruidoso are within easy day-trip range. Because fees, reservation policies and seasonal access can change, check the BLM Valley of Fires page or stop by the visitor center for current rules, campsite availability and any access requirements before you go.
