About

Wolf Creek Campground sits right on the southern shore of Lake Sakakawea in western North Dakota, offering wide, grassy campsites with lake views from most sites and direct water access for boats and anglers. The looped campground contains 67 primitive campsites each set up with a picnic table and grill and all appropriate for both RVs and tents with the East End holding 49 sites and the West End 18. Practical facilities include a boat ramp for launching, a fish-cleaning station, a fill-and-dump station for boater convenience, and brand new vault toilets; showers are not on-site but are available about 5 miles away in the Downstream Campground. Families will appreciate a small playground and common-area recreation like volleyball courts and horseshoe pits, while Saturday evenings in summer often feature amphitheater programs nearby. The setting is open and grassy, with campsites positioned close to the water so mornings and evenings bring easy shoreline access and long views across the lake. Beyond the campground, Lake Sakakawea stretches 178 miles with some 1,340 miles of shoreline and supports a large range of activities year-round boating, sailing, scuba diving, water sports, mountain biking, hiking, wildlife viewing and winter ice fishing among them. Anglers come for walleye, sauger, northern pike, muskie, bass, bluegill and crappie; the lake even hosts Chinook salmon (the only body of water in the state with that species) and has produced several state record fish, with the best catfishing found just 6 miles downstream of Garrison Dam. The campground borders the Wolf Creek Wildlife Management Area, which offers public hunting for deer, pheasant, sharp-tailed grouse, cottontail and squirrels in season, and the lake is an important stopover for whooping cranes and a nesting area for least tern and piping plover. Nearby points of interest include the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery with its visitor center and five 400-gallon aquariums, walking tours of the Garrison Dam Power Plant (June through early August on Thursday Saturday at 2 p.m.), and the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge visitor center about eight miles away. Reservations and any changes or cancellations must be made through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777; for facility-specific questions, call (701) 654-7411.
