“Clean facilities, great location and nice spots ”

Jason B 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“I came with camping friends to plant a tree in memory of a good friend. I met him camping at Downstream & he loved it there. The rangers joined us to honor his memory when we planted the tree. It was a memorable experience.”

Helen S 4 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“A pretty park with mature trees, nice and quiet. Decent sized parking spots for campers. Friendly staff.”

About

Downstream Campground sits on the east bank of the Missouri River just below Garrison Dam, about 75 miles northwest of Bismarck near Riverdale. The site is set in a natural cottonwood stand with open grassy areas and stretches of sandy river dune, and miles of walking and biking trails lead from the loops to the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery and a nearby trout pond. Anglers come here for a long list of species walleye, sauger, northern pike, various bass, bluegill, crappie and trout are common, and Lake Sakakawea is the only lake in North Dakota known to hold Chinook salmon; the best catfishing is found directly below the dam. The broader lake and river system supports boating, sailing, scuba diving, water sports and extensive wildlife viewing Lake Sakakawea is an important stopover for whooping cranes and provides nesting habitat for least terns and piping plovers while across the road the 2,250-acre Riverdale State Wildlife Management Area opens up hunting for deer, pheasants, grouse and small game in season. In winter the area still draws visitors for cross-country ski routes and bow hunting opportunities. The campground has 111 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents; hookups are available with 50/30/20-amp or 30/20-amp service and every site includes a picnic table and grill. Roads and many sites are paved, and the facility provides flush and vault toilets, showers, drinking water, a fill-and-dump station, three playgrounds, volleyball and horseshoe pits, and an amphitheater that commonly hosts Saturday evening outdoor movies and ranger programs. Nearby interpretive options include the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery visitor center with aquarium displays and summer tours of the Garrison Dam power plant (tours run in June and July and into early August on Thursdays Saturdays at 2 p.m.). Reservations and fee payments are handled through Recreation.gov (or by calling 1-877-444-6777), cancellation policies are posted on Recreation.gov, and for facility-specific questions you can call (701) 654-7411.
