“Pulled up to our reserved spot to find another camper already there. Camp host was out and we didn't feel like hanging out in the campground which is essentially a parking lot. Disappointing experience. ”

Curtis Creek Campground sits at about 2,000 feet in a narrow mountain valley where a lively trout stream runs along the east side of the looped campsites and old-growth forest rises on the surrounding ridges. This is part of the first tract of National Forest land in the eastern United States and the campground occupies the footprint of a former Civilian Conservation Corps camp, with scattered remnants of CCC buildings that history-minded visitors can explore. The creek itself is a draw known locally for trout fishing and dotted with shallow swimming and wading holes that are pleasant on hot summer afternoons and two Forest Service trails leave directly from the campground. The short Hickory Branch trail (about a half mile) drops to a series of waterfalls and provides access into the Mackey Mountain backcountry, which contains the largest unbroken block of old-growth in Pisgah; the Snooks Nose trail climbs more steeply to a ridge and eventually connects with the Blue Ridge Parkway. Other popular hikes and scenic drives, including Catawba Falls, Point Lookout and the Mount Mitchell area, are a short drive away, while Old Fort (roughly six miles) and Asheville (less than an hour) offer services, dining and cultural stops. The site has 24 developed campsites in three distinct loops: nine sites are sized for both RVs and tents and 15 are tent-only, with one loop laid out as dispersed roadside tent sites for a more private forest feel and another providing tent-only spots in an open grassy area. One loop is fully accessible and barrier-free and will accommodate RVs up to 35 feet. Every site comes with a tent pad, picnic table, lantern post and fire ring; vault toilets, drinking-water pumps, and bear-proof trash and recycling receptacles are on hand, and a campground host is available for visitor assistance. The gravel access road through the campground climbs toward the Blue Ridge Parkway, making the area convenient for scenic driving and for reaching Mount Mitchell, but wheelers should expect a narrow, unpaved approach once you leave US-70 and head up Curtis Creek Road from Old Fort. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal availability, check the Forest Service website or contact the local ranger district before you go.
