About

Black Mountain Campground sits along the South Toe River in the shadow of Mt. Mitchell, so the sound of running water and the sight of high, forested ridgelines shape much of the experience. At about 3,040 feet elevation, the campground is surrounded by mixed hardwoods and spruce-fir stands that support a variety of wildlife and native plants; Mt. Mitchell itself rises to 6,684 feet not far away, and several other high summits of the Black Mountains are visible from nearby viewpoints. The river that borders the loop is a focus for visitors trout fishing and riverside picnics are common while a range of trails suits different appetites: a short, half-mile forest walk is right from the area, and more committed hikers can follow routes that lead all the way to Mt. Mitchell (one option is about 5.6 miles). For longer outings and scenic drives, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mount Mitchell State Park are within easy reach, offering extended hiking, auto touring, and more upland vistas. Practical details are straightforward: the campground contains 25 sites in total, 23 of which accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 that are tent-only, so most groups can bring small-to-medium recreational vehicles. Sites are equipped with picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts and campfire rings with grills; the day facilities include restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers. On-site sales of firewood, ice, T-shirts and souvenirs make it easy to pick up essentials, but be prepared for mountain weather and cooler nights at this elevation. Access is by Highway 80 off US-19/US-19E toward Burnsville, near the Mount Mitchell Golf Course and South Toe River Road; for current fees, reservation rules, seasonal restrictions and any road updates, check the National Forests in North Carolina website or recreation.gov before you leave.
